It's the stuff of legends; the US Army requested a vehicle- and drove off in a hero. In June 1940, with World War II on the horizon, the US Army solicited bids from 135 automakers for a "light reconnaissance vehicle" tailored to Army specifications. The design was completed in a remarkable 75 days.
